SWANK MAGAZINE
"Flattops his name and
chasing pretty women, baby, thats his game. Or so he claims in track six of this,
the bands third release. From the sound of it, though,
swingin blues is his game: and, baby, he plays it "pretty" well. Left
Coast Carl of Californias KSPC Radio says, "This CD would make Louis Jordan
proud!"
I dont know enough about
Louis Jordan to know if thats true, but Tom Hall should be proud of an album where
the original tunes not only outnumber, but are actually better than the covers. While Tina
Stevens phrasing in and the
arrangement of, "Why Dont You Do Right" is impressive, the highlights of
this album are the original, bluesy tunes that divulge this bands true love:
"Crissy Lee,"
"Left Coast Carls BBQ," "Jump Cat Mambo," and "Big
Bills Blues" are among the best.
Flattops brand of blues is
heavy on the guitar of Brother Bob, the keyboards of Taryn Donath, and his own signature
harmonica. This isnt any old swing dance party. This ones happenin down
South where two-steppers and swing heads dance side by side. Never fear, though,
Toms a dancer too, and he knows what people want to dance to and he gives em
what they want to hear"
