BLUES ACCESS
"Flattop Tom & The Jump
Cats are on that swift-moving train known as the swing-and-jump resurgence on the West
Coast. Swing and jump resurgence on the West Coast. Swing and jump is now on TV ads, the
radio and even the mainstream pop chars. But before any of those things happened,
harmonica player/singer/dancer Flattop Tom Hall and his more-or-less eight-piece
band were grinding out the gigs around Los Angeles.
Swing Dance Party (Palamar) is
their third batch of tunes in the up-tempo, finger-popping style defined by a stead
comping piano, hopping horn charts and jazzy instrumental passages. Venerable swing oldies
like "Lester Leaps In" and the Charlie Christian killer, "Wholly
Cats," are mixed with Halls original and a few surprises.
Halls theatrical vocals
convey the good times, while guitarist Bob Robies and tenor player Big Bill Lucas
definitely know how to get business done." 4 Stars
